STORY DESCRIPTION

Since the memorable day when Gerhard was obliged to publicly cane his wife and her mother before a delegation of the town of Schlossburg's prominent citizens, there has been a new regime of domestic discipline in the Handler household. Both the ladies of the house have become accustomed to Gerhard's regular use of the cane and to lowering their knickers for punishment. It is a highly satisfactory situation for Gerhard, who is enjoying his new authority and his mastery beneath his own roof and more the respectable behaviour of the ladies in public.

Just as Gerhard is congratulating himself on the improved conduct of the two women, however, they contrive to misbehave once more. This time it is no minor foolishness requiring a simple caning. This time they are arrested by the police and face criminal charges. They are saved from that through the intervention of the local aristocratic Grafin Mathilda who is able to persuade the police authorities to allow her to settle the matter domestically, without recourse to the law. As a result, both ladies are sent in disgrace to the town's castle where, in the cellars beneath Grafin Mathilda's ancestral home, they will face their sternest punishment yet and Gerhard will be introduced to the dark underworld of Schlossburg's society with all its corruption and depravity.
